The peach tree (Prunus persica) is a species of the Prunus genus that produces an edible fruit called a peach.

The peach tree has its origins in China, where it was considered a symbol of immortality. Its beautiful flowers have been celebrated by poets, painters and singers alike. The tree was brought by caravan from the Orient to Persia and then it reached Europe; it was Persia that gave the species its name (Prunus persica or Persian apple), a name still used in several Italian dialects.
